The silverfish is a nocturnal insect that infests houses. They are an absolute menace and once allowed to flourish in a house, are very difficult to eradicate. They crawl behind wallpapers and eat up the glue that holds the paper to the wall, thereby ruining the long efforts and the money invested in getting the wallpaper installed in the first place. They are quite adept at chewing through clothes — cotton and silk being their favourites. These pests also flock towards paper. Be it books or newspapers, they would feed on anything made of paper. It is an equally unpleasant experience to have silverfish scaling over ones’ body. Plants are also a favourite for these pests. Plants that might have been placed within a house for the purpose of enhancing its aesthetic qualities might fall prey to the silverfish if left unprotected. For all these reasons, it is imperative to launch an organized programme of silverfish pest control. This programme would demand the single-minded dedication of the home owner since wiping out these pests is not all that easy. However, control methods should be as environmental friendly as possible since strong pesticides are harmful for humans as well, especially if there are children around. Often if there are pets in the house, they fall prey to poisons placed for silverfish. A natural method of silverfish pest control is that of posting sticky glue insect traps with baits such as shreds of cloth or bits of paper attached to them in and around the nooks and corners of the house. Since silverfish breed in any fissures or cracks that might be there, care should be taken to block those spaces as well. Leaky water pipes are potential breeding sites and should be mended.
